Hotel Review: Almare, a Luxury Collection Resort, Isla Mujeres

The Almare Isla Mujeres is Marriott Luxury Collection’s first all-inclusive resort, but don’t expect an all-night party vibe that is usually found across the water at the massive all-inclusive resorts that line the beaches of Cancun. The design of this intimate, adults-only boutique hotel property reaches back to the region’s Mayan roots, and can be felt in the colour palette of the hotel suites and the multi-course meals served by the Breeze pool or on the property’s rooftop restaurant, Seasalt. I thoroughly enjoyed the hotel’s active island adventures and wellness offerings at the ALMA Spa, which provided nourishment for the body and mind, emphasizing relaxation, mindfulness and the chance to fully relax and get into the easygoing vibe of island life.

Value for Money

Almare, a Luxury Collection Resort, Isla Mujeres, has 109 guest rooms and suites with generous proportions, designed in light, sand-toned colours and modern wood decor. Many of the walls are plastered in chukum, an eco-friendly natural resin material used by the Mayans to protect building structures. Suite amenities come with robes, slippers, comfortable beds covered in local textiles, and equipped with jacuzzi tubs and outdoor patios complete with outdoor furniture and views over the ocean and Cancun. Room rates at all-inclusive Almare start from approximately $650 in low season, and include all meals and alcoholic beverages served at resort restaurants; BOGA, Seasalt Rooftop Restaurant, Botanik Juice Bar, The Breeze Pool Bar, Al Vento Beach Club and the Al Paso Food Truck.

Safety + Accessibility

The Almare Isla Mujeres is located on the southwest side of the island which is less-touristy than the northern part of Mujeres and subject to magnificent sunsets. Access to the resort from the street is via a security-manned gate, and arrival to the resort from Cancun is via the public Mujeres Main Ferry or arranged through a private airport and boat transfer from Cancun Airport directly to the hotel pier. Taxis are available for hire to get around the island, though many people rent golf carts. The hotel’s popular guided walks to see the sunrise and rugged cliffs at Punta Sur and other outdoor activities on land and water are led by experienced resort staff.

The Story

Almare Isla Mujeres, is Marriott Luxury Collection’s first all-inclusive resort, a nod to the increasing desire of travellers to enjoy a care-free and upscale Mexican holiday. Almare is part of the Marriott Bonvoy program, so members can book a stay with points and receive special rates, as well as room upgrades, late checkout when available, and free spa services depending on guests’ program status.

Sustainability

The renovation of Almare Isla Mujeres was done with an eye towards sustainability. Elements include LED lighting, hotel beams made from recycled materials, the use of natural, eco-conscious finishing materials and installation of a special HVAC system to reduce water use. Drinking water is provided in Tetra Pack cartons, and guests are encouraged to refill gifted Almare-branded water bottles at fountains on the property.
