InterContinental in Amman, Jordan

InterContinental Amman in Jordan

A historic landmark in Jordan’s capital city

To most, the InterContinental Amman (Jordan) is a historic landmark and popular business hotel in the diplomatic area. But I have a soft spot for it after staying there three times in the last two years, including once when I was convalescing from a serious gastro illness. Not only did I have the on-call doctor come to my room, the 24/7 room service kept me nourished with orange juice, white rice and bananas. On my most recent trip, I got to actually enjoy the breakfast buffet and pool. Set on the summit of one of the capital city’s seven hills, the InterContinental is just a quick taxi ride to lively Rainbow Street or the ever-popular Hashem Restaurant (for falafels and hummus) and Habibah Sweets (for kunafa).

Value for Money

The InterContinental (an IHG brand) doesn’t feel as big as it is, with 440 rooms and suites, four buildings, eight floors, six restaurants and both outdoor and indoor swimming pools. There are classic and deluxe rooms, plus suites and Club InterContinental rooms. I usually stay in classic rooms, but my IHG One Rewards membership just got me a free upgrade to a premium suite with a king bed, living space, mini kitchen and two bathrooms. Expect luxury trimmings, including air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, free WiFi, mini refrigerators, complimentary bottled water, free coffee and tea supplies, irons and ironing boards. Marble-decorated bathrooms come with hair dryers and free bath amenities. A lavish breakfast buffet is included, and restaurant options include Burj Al Hamam for Lebanese fare.

Safety + Accessibility

The InterContinental is just a 40-kilometre, 45-minute taxi ride from Queen Alia International Airport. Expect the first round of security to clear your driver and vehicle as you enter the gated compound, and the second round to clear you and your luggage as you pass through airport-style scanners to enter the hotel. There are in-room safes and telephones that connect to the concierge and front desk. Wheelchair accessible rooms are available.

The Story

As the hotel tells it, the dream of creating Jordan’s first international luxury hotel came true when the InterContinental opened on March 15, 1963, during a memorable grand opening ceremony held under the patronage of His Majesty the Late King Hussein Bin Talal. That means the historic hotel will turn 63 in 2026.
