Hotel Review

Milam in Tulum, Mexico

Milam-Room-with-a-pool

A jungle sanctuary for `personal growth and collective enlightenment’

Milam’s concierge staff like to walk you to your room so they can watch your reaction to the pool nestled between the king-sized bed and living room. Yes, you read that correctly — you sleep beside a heated indoor pool (not a hot tub) that’s big enough to float in like a starfish or even do a couple of front crawl strokes in. And while I’ve had swim-up rooms before, this was a first. The second thing that jumps out at this boutique hotel is a box with green and white ribbons, pins and a pen. I’m encouraged to write my heart’s desire on one of them and hang it on the Dream Tree hidden in a sacred garden called Shin-boku.

While the Michelin Star recognizes the world’s most outstanding restaurants, the Michelin Key has been doing the same for hotels since 2024. Milam has been awarded one Michelin Key for two years in a row, signifying it offers “a very special stay” even though it’s not in the beachfront resort district but in the jungle near the edge of Tulum.

Value for Money

The adults-only Milam’s 31 villas and five residences are each made from plaster and clay and boast “dream-inspired interiors” with macrame accents. Parking is free. High-season stays are admittedly pricey but watch for deals. I saw last-minute November prices as low as $227USD for villas and $295USD for four-bedroom residences. A narrow, 150-metre-long pool flanked by day beds stretches from just behind reception almost to the back of the property. The wonderful restaurant, Umana, offers room service and the swim-up Samsara Room Bar plays on the Tibetan Buddhist concept of Samsara (the eternal cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth) and “Mayan views on the sacred cycles of existence.” The Xunáan Spa offers everything from treatments and yoga to sound healing and temazcal (a traditional Mexican sweat lodge ceremony). Guests can take shuttles to Grupo Bardo’s other two hotels, family-friendly Una Vida and adults-only Bardo for some activities and meals.

Safety + Accessibility

In-room safes were welcome, and so was being linked to the concierge by WhatsApp. Not being able to lock the glass door to my outdoor shower was unnerving as a solo female traveller, despite the fact the private space is protected by high walls. I felt better after discovering there’s 24/7 security, video surveillance and electric perimeter fences. With steps just past reception to the rest of the property, steps in villas and narrow paths sometimes dotted with trees, this is not the hotel for wheelchair users.

The Story

With a name that’s a Tibetan Buddhist reference to tantric “dream yoga,” Milam launched in December 2023. As guest relations manager, Mara Zurita puts it: “We believe in the power of dreams.” Grupo Bardo is 90 per cent owned by a group of Mexican friends, she said, while the remaining owners are American.

Sustainability

Milam says it’s “committed to supporting sustainability and responsible practices, sourcing locally, and preserving the natural beauty and heritage of the Tulum jungle.” It can arrange bike rentals as downtown and the beach are both several kilometres away. To reduce plastic use, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and liquid soap are in bulk dispensers. Solar panels heat the indoor pools and except for one small area, the large outdoor pool is only heated by the sun.
