Art-minded hotel offers a lesson in Welsh hospitality

Expect to be welcomed with Welsh cakes when you check into Twr y Felin Hotel, a contemporary art hotel built around a windmill in St Davids along the Pembrokeshire coast. Munching on the round and savoury tea cakes as you take the elevator to your room, don’t be startled when a woman’s pre-recorded voice shares floor information in Welsh. It’s all part of the croeso cynnes cymreig (warm Welsh welcome). This two-storey boutique hotel pairs modern comforts with a rich history and more than 250 pieces of specially commissioned art. St Davids is named for the patron saint of Wales and is the United Kingdom’s smallest city, with a population of about 1,800 and no traffic lights.

Value for Money

Twr y Felin — Welsh for mill tower — has 39 luxurious rooms, Blas Restaurant, Lolfa Lounge, Cornel Bar and treatment room. Eleven rooms in the Windmill Wing retain original features, while 28 Oriel rooms are in the art gallery wing. Rooms might have private terraces, juliet balconies or sea-view balconies. Some have walk-in showers while others have showers over bathtubs. Each space boasts handcrafted furniture and original artworks inspired by the regional landscape. My room had a king bed, desk, flat-screen TV, coffee maker, kettle, mini fridge, robe, slippers and Aromatherapy Associates toiletries plus a spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower and bathtub.

Safety + Accessibility

Twr y Felin is just a short stroll from downtown St Davids. Since there isn’t a train station here, you’re likely arriving by rental car. There are ground floor rooms and others on the first and second floors with stair or elevator access. The hotel is fully accessible on the ground floor and has one accessible room, but call to speak to staff about specific needs. Rooms have views of either the sea or the peninsula’s countryside. The Tyddewi (David’s House) suite spans the top two floors of the windmill tower and has 360-degree views.

The Story

Once used to grind corn, the windmill dates back to 1806 and has been part of a hotel for more than a century. In the late 1980s, this was an eco-lodge and outdoor adventure centre whose owner introduced the sport of coasteering (which you can do here in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park) to the world. In 2016, it reopened as a contemporary art. New rooms are named after the local headlands, islands and caves just as original rooms were named for local ports, beaches, moors and hills. Twr y Felin’s boutique sister properties are Roch Castle and Penrhiw Priory.
