‘Mama Simba’ and the ladies of KopeLion

Intent on Safari - IWD 2023
About this submission:
“Ingela Jansson – ‘Mama Simba’ is one of the most amazing women I have ever met, and it’s an honor to call her my friend. She is the founder of KopeLion based in the Ngorongoro conservation area where she, and her team work hard to ensure that the lion population survives and thrives alongside the communities that reside in the area.

Ingela, is one of the most resilient people I know. When she started the project, she was a one women band living out of her LandRover. Now she is incredibly well established (Even CNN was keen to feature her!) and has earned the respect of the community on which the success of her project is so dependent. Through all her hard work, perseverance and setbacks, she is still today, a glass-full type of character!

Working in a patriarchal culture, there is still strong presence of women that make up the KopeLion team, one standout star is Retilda Nicolaus. Retilda started as the office cleaner, but it didn’t take long before she learned how to use computer and took on the admin duties! She didn’t stop there, she has since learned how to drive and is now the projects ‘go to’ driver, even with some basic mechanic skills after completing a course on car maintenance!

A very impressive team lead by incredible women. To learn more about KopeLion check out their website www.kopelion.org
What is your company doing to support women?
It goes without saying that we do our best for the trickle down of income to reach women-run businesses, both within the tourism industry as well as outside the tourism industry. We also feel it’s important to support projects who support us – KopeLion and their conservation efforts being a great example! Anyone who wants to go on safari can choose to learn more about the project – meet Ingela or other team-members, to learn more about their work to promote human-lion coexistence, in exchange for a donation that will continue to support this important program!
What can women travellers do to support other women when they travel?
Listen and engage! Women are the glue that holds communities together. They often have the dreams, the ambitions and even the skills to get to where they want to go in life, but often it’s a lack of confidence that holds them back. Listening and engaging with the women who cross your paths, whether it’s a fellow passenger on a train trip through Europe, or its your waitress in a camp in the middle of the Serengeti, might give them that extra bit of confidence to get them to the finish line! All it costs is a bit of a time, and an open mind, it’s a win- win!
Two women stop to take a photo while on a hiking trip. Traveling more sustainably is one way women can make a difference in travel.
