Uplifting Communities

I truly believe that travel can be a force for good and a powerful tool for women’s empowerment—not only for the women employed by Fernweh Fair Travel but also for the travelers themselves. By creating safe, inclusive, and immersive travel experiences led by local women, we break barriers, foster cultural exchange, and support sustainable communities.

The Story Behind Fernweh Fair Tourism

In 2009, founder Poonam witnessed the struggles of young widows and survivors of domestic violence in India, realizing they needed more than shelter—they needed skills and sustainable income. What began as a women’s shelter in the Indian Himalayas quickly evolved into a responsible travel initiative that empowers women, preserves local traditions, and uplifts entire communities. Today, women serve as guides, hosts, artisans, and leaders, creating meaningful travel experiences while building independent futures.

Empowering Communities Through Sustainable Travel

Fernweh Fair Travel is dedicated to uplifting rural communities in the Indian Himalayas by providing training, employment, and cultural preservation opportunities.

How We Make an Impact:

  • Provide women with jobs as tour guides, homestay hosts, and artisans
  • Revive traditional handicrafts and support local artisans
  • Promote responsible travel and environmental education
  • Support organic farming by sourcing directly from local farmers
  • Offer career guidance and equal opportunities for youth

Travel with Purpose – Support Local Communities

Fernweh Fair Travel is more than just a journey—it’s a way to uplift local communities. Every trip directly supports women, artisans, and farmers in the Indian Himalayas, providing sustainable livelihoods through homestays, guiding, handicrafts, and organic farming. Travelers not only experience authentic village life but also learn about environmental sustainability and have the opportunity to teach skills to local children. Your adventure helps preserve traditions, empower women, and create lasting change.

Two women stop to take a photo while on a hiking trip. Traveling more sustainably is one way women can make a difference in travel.
