Known to the Arabs as al-Maghreb al-Aqsa—the farthest land of the setting sun—Morocco sits at the western edge of the Arab world, just nine miles from Europe across the Strait of Gibraltar. A historic crossroads since the 11th century, it served as Islam’s gateway to Western Europe. Our journey begins in Casablanca and winds through the imperial cities of Rabat, Meknes, and Fes. Crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains to Erfoud, we reach the Sahara, where we ride camels with Berber tribesmen and spend a night in desert tents under the stars. We continue to the dramatic Todra Gorge, then through the scenic Dades Valley and High Atlas Mountains to Ouarzazate and Taroudant. After exploring the coastal town of Essaouira, we conclude our adventure back in Casablanca via Marrakech.
