Discover the Swahili Coast

Shoreline of the Swahili Coast, showcasing crystal-clear waters - Discover the Swahili Coast

An Archaeological Odyssey by The Swahili Coast Tour with Far Horizons

An extraordinary 16-day journey along the Swahili Coast. The ebb and flow of trade winds have carried merchants, conquerors, and cultures for over a millennium. Starting in the 8th century, Arab and Persian traders established settlements on the East African coast. Later, Portuguese explorers arrived in the 15th century, followed by the era of Omani sultanates. Throughout history, this narrow coastline has been a hub of cultural exchange. Our expedition will take you to Lamu, a town unchanged since the 18th century. Additionally, explore the majestic ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani, praised by Ibn Battuta as “one of the most beautiful cities.

The Swahili Coast’s strategic location made it crucial to the Indian Ocean trade network. It connected Africa with Arabia, Persia, India, and China. Gold from Zimbabwe, ivory from the Congo, and slaves from inland Africa passed through Swahili ports. In return, porcelain, silk, and spices flowed back into these ports. This trade created a unique Swahili culture, blending African and Asian influences. This is reflected in its language, cuisine, architecture, and art. Our journey will showcase this blend, from Mombasa’s Old Town doorways to the mysterious ruins of Gede, abandoned in the 17th century.

As we travel from Kenya to Tanzania, we’ll witness the lasting legacy of this remarkable civilization. In Lamu, traditional dhows still sail the waters, and donkeys remain the main transport. In Zanzibar, we’ll explore Stone Town’s alleys, filled with the scent of cloves and echoes of the slave trade. Our journey ends in Kilwa Kisiwani, a medieval hub that once controlled East Africa’s gold trade. Throughout, Dr. Stephanie Wynne-Jones will provide expert insights into the region. Her knowledge of ongoing archaeological discoveries will reshape our understanding of this fascinating coast.
