Intrepid Travel’s Women’s Expedition to Pakistan’s Hunza Valley

Intrepid Travel - Pakistan - IWD 2023
About this submission:
“Cultural and religious factors mean that local interaction in some countries can be challenging and complex for mixed gender groups. What if, as a female traveler in Pakistan you could head down to the beauty salon with your female leader and get your hair done? The hijab comes off and there’s a real chance to connect. On this Intrepid tour, join a local female leader as she takes you on a unique journey to Northern Pakistan’s Hunza Valley. Visit a carpet-weaving center run by local women, and then take advantage of an opportunity to be pampered at a one-of-a-kind salon, owned and operated by a local woman at her home.”
What is your company doing to support women?
Intrepid Travel’s Women’s Expeditions are all about breaking down barriers, fostering discussion and creating immersive local experiences for women that are ordinarily off limits on our regular group departures. They provide local women employment through locally led experiences, while also supporting women-owned and operated businesses in our supply chain. Alongside the Pakistan Expedition, Intrepid is also debuting a Nepal Women’s Expedition, which will run for the first time this year. The Intrepid Women’s Expeditions range will feature six trips in 2023 (Pakistan, Nepal, Morocco, India, Jordan, Iran) each one carefully designed to support employment opportunities for women while expanding the possibilities of female travel.

In traditionally conservative countries or places where women are not viewed as equal, certain traditions and customs can make genuine cultural interaction difficult. Travelling in an all-female group means women can connect more directly with each other, and travelers can learn more about women and their day-to-day lives. What these trips are not about is replicating run-of-the-mill itineraries for women-only ‘girls clubs’ which fuel gender stereotypes and exclusivity.
What can women travellers do to support other women when they travel?
Invest in organizations that put gender equality at the core of their operations and understand that the key to creating real, meaningful change requires women’s voices to be heard, as well as their participation and leadership. Always consider the supply chain and buy from women-owned businesses and/or women-made goods.
