Selkie Explorers

Celia Bull founder of Selkie Explorers

Hebridean sailing adventures with female skipper, climber, yoga instructor and Isle of Eigg crofter

I have climbed and sailed all over the world for the past four decades.  The experiences I found most memorable and rewarding are those when I ventured forth either alone or with a team of female friends. I find that I perform to the best of my abilities, laugh and cry more and find a deeper sense of reward and connection.  Since founding Selkie Explorers, I have led many voyages and adventures with only women onboard.  I love to witness and facilitate the emergence of confidence in themselves, the knowledge and wonder at the beautiful environment, the journey that they are undertaking and the realisation of what they are capable of.

Selkie Explorers – Female skippered sailboat adventures in the Scottish Hebrides Selkie Explorers offers female-skippered sailing voyages aboard the 15-metre aluminium expedition sailboat “Selkie.” In addition, the voyages explore the isles on the west coast of Scotland and beyond. Furthermore, I, Celia Bull, founded the business in 2015. At that time, it was based on the community-owned Isle of Eigg, one of the Small Isles in the Hebrides. To this day, I am the owner and skipper of Selkie Explorers. Moreover, I weave my sailing experience together with my knowledge of mountains, yoga and island living to create unique sailing adventures for up to six guests. All the voyages are multiday, departing primarily from the Highland port of Mallaig. Interestingly, Mallaig is the final station for the famous Harry Potter Jacobite steam train. However, where Selkie sails will depend on several factors. These include the number of days, weather, and sea conditions at the time of the voyage. Additionally, the purpose of the trip, such as geology, walking, yoga, or wellbeing, also influences the route. Moreover, our Outer Hebrides voyages explore many beautiful, remote islands with sheltered anchorages. These islands are full of wildlife and history. Occasionally, we may even reach the World Heritage archipelago of St Kilda, if conditions allow. Ultimately, each journey is unique. At its core, it’s about finding a connection with the boat, your fellow voyagers, and the surrounding land, sea, and air. Whether you are sailing through, swimming in, walking up, or simply being in the sea’s rich nature and island beauty, the experience is deeply immersiv

Commitment to Sustainability

It was my commitment to sustainable living that brought me to the Isle of Eigg and is integral to Selkie Explorers. Eigg is a pioneering example of sustainable living, with its community-owned status and renewable energy initiatives. Selkie Explorers is committed to conservation, sustainable practice, and actively engaging in cetacean surveys and marine plastic collection.
