The heal of Italy is one of the least known areas for mass tourism—and we cannot be happier with that. Whether it is because it is only now gaining in popularity, so it is less traveled, or because of some truly unique villages, honestly, it doesn’t matter.
What matters is that it offers a magnificent holiday destination, best enjoyed with a great love of yummy things and a love for the sea. We have just added it to our trips because we prepared it in 2018—when all was well in the world. Here are some (because there are many!) fun facts to build up the anticipation:
- It is famous for its olive oil production and provides 40% of the country’s olive oil.
- Puglia has the longest coastline of any mainland region in the country
- The Pizzica, a popular Italian folk couples dance originally from Salento, is kept very much alive in Puglia. There is even a yearly event that has been happening for 26 years.
- Fare un Brindisi in Puglia means to make a toast. One legend says the term Fare un Brindisi originated in Roman times. For instance, Roman Soldiers left for war via the Appian way which ended in Brindisi. Before they left the harbor to fight their next battle, they made a toast for a successful war and a safe and healthy return home.
- There are local dialects in Puglia, such as Barese, Foggiano and even Griko, which is considerably closer to Greek than Italian.
- Puglia has one of the world’s only eight-sided castles: Castel del Monte, in Andria.
- Puglia is the least mountainous region in Italy.
