Travel with the Conservation Volunteers International Program on our Costa Rica Volunteer Trip.
Experience conservation in the land known for its progressive environmental policies and rich biodiversity. In collaboration with local nonprofits, we participate in projects to help sea turtles and Resplendent Quetzals.
We meet in San José, Costa Rica’s capital. Then, we travel south to Punta Banco on the Burica Peninsula. Where we help protect the area’s biodiversity by participating in a sea turtle preservation program.
The sea turtle project is under the auspices of a local nonprofit community organization. It was founded to “improve the conservation conditions of sea turtles that inhabit and nest along the coastline of the Osa canton, particularly at Punta Banco beach.” The group will participate in beach patrols to locate, excavate, and relocate sea turtle nests to a protected turtle hatchery. The project will also include working in and around the turtle hatchery, recording scientific data, and working on projects to mitigate beach erosion, which threatens turtle nesting.
Be sure to bring your camera to enjoy the excellent wildlife photography opportunities. You will encounter as we pause during our travels.
Other highlights of our journey:
- We will visit Marino Ballena National Park and enjoy wildlife spotting. Our local guide is known for his ability to spot wildlife. Bring your camera – you might see macaws, crocodiles, toucans, monkeys, sloths, or more.
- Spend two nights in the highland forests. Where we built nests for Resplendent Quetzal and engage in other quetzal habitat improvement projects.
