Lava fields and steaming fumaroles fold into valleys that gently fall into the black sand coastlines. Ribbons of waterfalls pound into the earth, pockets of hot springs invite weary riders at every turn. Riding through this ever-changing landscape on an Icelandic horse makes the experience indelible.
The affectionate and sure-footed horses have a deeply steeped story too. They were introduced to the island by Vikings more than 1,000 years ago and herds of Icelandic horses still roam the valleys today, untethered.
The Icelandic horses you’ll be riding are known for their distinctly smooth gait. This trip is suitable for women with novice skills who are open to learning as the style is quite different. More experienced riders will appreciate the introduction to the trot and signature tölt and flying pace.
